Music Reports Celebrates 10 Years of Songdex Marketplace, Expanding Scalable Music Licensing

Music Reports is marking the 10th anniversary of Songdex Marketplace, its direct-licensing platform for music publishers, rights holders, and DSPs.

The platform connects DSPs with administrators of mechanical rights through an opt-in system. Publishers can review licensing proposals and choose whether or not to participate.

The Songdex Marketplace model addresses a long-standing industry challenge. Digital services often need to negotiate with thousands of separate rights holders. That process can create substantial administrative costs and delays. Incomplete song-rights metadata can also expose services to copyright infringement risk.

Music Reports developed the Songdex Marketplace to solve these issues after a client sought a transition from non-interactive web radio to a full-catalog interactive music service. The service needed mechanical licenses in addition to performance licenses. It also sought voluntary licensing options beyond the Section 115 statutory mechanical license.

Music Reports expanded its existing Songdex Portal to support the initiative. Administrators already used the portal to manage catalogs, receive royalty statements, and process payments. The marketplace added a mechanism for DSPs to present service details and licensing offers directly to publishers on an opt-in basis.

According to Music Reports, tens of thousands of administrators reviewed the first offer within weeks of launch. In the decade that followed, Songdex Marketplace hosted over 60 license offers. It has directed hundreds of millions of dollars in royalties to publishers. The platform’s cost model places administrative expenses on DSPs. Music Reports says publishers receive 100% of their gross royalties through the marketplace. Its structure later informed elements of the Mechanical Licensing Collective (MLC), established under the Music Modernization Act (MMA).

Songdex Marketplace also supports rights accuracy. Publishers’ song records are registered in Songdex before they evaluate offers. Music Reports can provide licensees with daily reports identifying sound recordings whose required publishing rights have been secured. That process gives DSPs a clearer picture of cleared works while respecting rights holders that decline an offer.
